Check out the new TapTap

If you’ve visited TapTap on your phone recently, you may have noticed some changes. We’ve been working to make TapTap more useful, and we’re excited to announce that, in addition to helping you discover cool new sites on the mobile web, TapTap now lets you search for ringtones and videos!

From your phone, go to m.taptap.net and search directly for what you’re looking for (Akon ringtones, the Super Mario theme song, Family Guy videos, etc.). You can still tap the stuff you like, and see the hottest ringtones and videos that other TapTap visitors are tapping. We’re indexing tens of thousands of items, so check back often for new arrivals. We hope you like it!

What do people do on the mobile web?

We’ve had a busy few months building out the site and listening to our visitors. Our goal is to help people discover the mobile web, so we thought we’d learn a little about what sorts of sites folks are visiting. We took a look at the various categories of sites in TapTap and counted the number of “taps” each category received (a “tap” means that one of our visitors liked the site). Here’s what we found:

This is consistent with what many folks in mobile have known for a while now – mobile users are looking for content like ringtones, videos, and games. We’re often frustrated when we try to discover good mobile content as it’s hard to know where to look – it will be interesting to watch how discovery improves over time for this sort of content.
